Privacy policy
In short
- We don’t ask you for personal information. The site has no accounts, forms or comments.
- This guide doesn’t publish information about people in custody.
- Google AdSense shows ads on most of our guide pages. For visitors in Europe, Google’s consent message asks for your choices first; in the US states Google’s privacy message covers, that message lets you opt out.
- Google Analytics runs only after you agree to it in Google’s consent message for Europe, so it doesn’t run for anyone who isn’t shown that message.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits without cookies.
Advertising
This site shows ads from Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google’s Ads Settings. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
For visitors in Europe, Google’s consent message asks for your choices before personalized ads or cookies are used, and lets you change them later. For the US, see California and other US states.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand which pages help people. It loads only after you consent to it in Google’s consent message for Europe. We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies.
California and other US states
This section describes the privacy choices on this site for visitors in California and other US states with privacy laws. It doesn’t say whether any particular law applies to this website.
- Advertising. The ads on our guide pages come from Google AdSense, which uses cookies, as described above. In the US states that Google’s privacy message covers, the message on our guide pages offers its privacy opt-out. This page and the site’s other information pages (contact, terms and the site map) carry no Google code, so the message isn’t shown there.
- Google Analytics. It needs consent in Google’s European message (see Analytics). Visitors in the US aren’t shown that message, so Google Analytics doesn’t run for them.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics. It counts visits without cookies.
- Email. Messages to our corrections address reach us through Purelymail, our email forwarding provider. How we use them is under If you email us.
- Other choices. You can turn off personalized ads in Google’s Ads Settings (linked under Advertising), and block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings. For questions about your information, see contact us.
Hosting and server logs
The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical information such as your IP address to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse.
If you email us
If you send us a correction or question, we use your message and email address only to reply and to fix the page. Email reaches us through our email forwarding provider. We don’t share it or add you to any list.
